A Baby Story - The Sequel

9:31 PM

Warning: Due to the Graphic Nature of This Post, Reader Discretion Is Advised.

Nothing like a good birth story to get me back to blogging! I hesitate to share these things, but it's really much easier for me to put it all out there in typing than have you nosies awkwardly ask me "how it went"... or worse yet me being in mixed company telling the story and not knowing how much is too much. SO, read if you're nosey... and I know you are.

Unlike many sequels, this one far surpasses it's predecessor. It's all I can do right now to refrain from reading my past blog about Liam's birth story for fear of deleting it out of complete and total embarrassment. What I once thought a "birth story" has been mightily put to shame! Laiden's birth story is the ultimate. It deserves it's own episode of the TLC show and would make every bubbly 8-week-pregnant-first-timer sick. It would make veteran mothers nauseated and L&D nurses cringe. I might be exaggerating just a teensy bit, but only a teensy.

For those of you that don't know. We have been apart of a church planting process for the past several months. The church officially launched September 9th and has been FABULOUS! Anywho, every Sunday without fail, I had contractions. I'm generally not quick to "blame satan"... but Lord have mercy I contracted EVERY STINKING SUNDAY from the time I woke up until a few hours after church. This past Sunday things got slightly more exciting than usual when the contractions didn't go away after church. They continued through the afternoon and actually got QUITE painful. I started bleeding. Nothing major, but enough for me to think twice about it. We were getting ready that night to head to a friend's birthday party and I decided to call my doctor... just in case.

I got in touch with the doctor on call around 4:30. Blah, blah, blah, 33 weeks, contractions, bleeding. Apparently that's enough to warrant a "come on by". I told Will to go to the party and I would just run by the hospital, but he said he would take me and we would skip the party. We got to the hospital and my contractions actually began to die down quite a bit. After a long, drawn out check in process and lots of waiting, waiting, waiting on the nurse to stop chitty-chatting, I was hooked up to the monitor for observation around 6:30.

The nurse observed I was having contractions.

Will asked what he should tell everyone about why we weren't at the party. I told him not to say anything because they were going to tell me to drink more fluids, rest, and go home.

The nurse then informed us that the doctor needed to check me, but couldn't check me in the room that I was in. She was going to "help us" move to another room. Her help consisted of grabbing Liam and parading him down the halls for all her friends to see. We literally stopped to chat with every nurse from this side of the hospital to that so she could show off my child. While I'm flattered, I was in a backless gown having contractions. It was an entirely different parade for me.

They put us in a Labor & Delivery room. Around 7:30, The doctor came in and observed I was having contractions. After checking my cervix and running a few tests, it was decided that I was 3cm dilated, 40% effaced, and in preterm labor.

She decided to start Magnesium Sulfate through IV to try and get the contractions to stop. She said it's commonly a "last resort" for this situation, but at 33 weeks she did not want to risk it. If you've never had Magnesium Sulfate... you're lucky! I thought my skin was going to catch on fire and my head roll off my shoulders. I was also given a steroid shot to help develop the baby's lungs. JUST. IN. CASE. As if I wasn't on fire enough, I needed another needle induced burning sensation.

My wonderful parents came and picked up Liam. My dearest friend (who is also my Pastor's wife) - who is literally super woman - came and encouraged me.

Waiting, Waiting, Waiting.

Around 10:30 the doctor checked me again. The contractions had slowed every so slightly, but I was now 4.5cm and 50% effaced. She decided if I went past 5cm she would stop the medicine and let me progress.

More Waiting, Waiting, Waiting and another large does of fire in my veins.

At midnight I was checked again, this time by the nurse... 5.5cm and 80% effaced. Laiden had decided that she was coming despite our best efforts to stop her.

I got some pain medicine and had the Magnesium Sulfate turned off.

Waiting, Waiting, Waiting until I couldn't take it any longer! At 2:00 am I signed my life away for an epidural.

I knew the drill. Bend over, hug the pillow, quick stick, pressure, EUPHORIA! Unfortunately, my epidural didn't go quite as planned. I know I'm a whole-lotta-drama and tend to exaggerate, but when I tell you that I almost DIED I am not joking or exaggerating in the very slightest. The anesthesiologist almost killed me.

I remember my epidural with Liam well. I was shocked that my IV hurt worse and that it took a grand total of 2 minutes to do. I remember that fabulous numbing, warming sensation down my legs that ended all pain. This time was much different. The process seemed to take forever and was horrible painful. Despite numbing, I could feel the epidural going in. Things didn't feel right. Instead of a warming sensation going down to my legs, it went up and spread across my body. My tongue went numb, I couldn't breathe, and at the worst of it I couldn't hold my head up or keep my eyes open. I was terrified. I remember trying so hard to keep my eyes open for fear that I would stop breathing if my eyes closed. I remember trying to communicate my symptoms to my nurses and seeing the panicked looks in their eyes. I kept asking them if I was going to be ok and their "of course, sweetie"'s were far less than convincing. Will says the anesthesiologist was pacing and panicking as well. He kept using big words about his concern for my respiration depression and such to mask the obvious... I couldn't breathe.

It took almost 4 hours for me to regain some sense of consciousness and normalcy - even after they reversed the epidural medication.

The numbness slowly disappeared down my body from my head to my feet. Around 6:00 that morning I was semi back to normal and began to realize that my epidural was disappearing, but the baby was still coming. I began asking about my options.

My anesthesiologist returned. He told me that my epidural was "inserted wrong" and that he could either give me a "low dose" of the medicine when the time was appropriate or try to reinsert my epidural the right way. Neither sounded appealing. He didn't seem up for either one and offered lots of I'm Sorry's.

7:00 was time for shift change. I got a new nurse, but my sweet doctor hung around. She checked me and I was 9cm. She made the decision to break my water. Let me just say - that gush of fluid without an epidural was such a disgusting feeling that I almost vomited. It literally made me sick! The doctor also started pitocin and we prepared for delivery! I started freaking out about the pain. My contractions were getting stronger and stronger. This was the first time I had ever experienced "ready to push" contractions and they were no joke.

My doctor looked at me and said the last thing I wanted to hear:
"The best thing you can do right now for your pain is to have this baby"

I. AM. ABOUT. TO DELIVER. WITHOUT. AN. EPIDURAL.

After 2 more FOR REAL contractions I told Will that I quit and couldn't do this. haha! Luckily my new anesthesiologist showed up. He wasn't willing to do any epidural anything because of all of the issues I had, but he gave me something to "take the edge off". Whatever.

The pain was absolutely horrendous. It made me physically sick. I sweated and vomited and got horrendous shakes. My body had lost it's flipping mind.

After a "test push" that almost delivered Laiden in one fell swoop, they prepped for delivery. I had my doctor and my nurse. Laiden had a neonatologist, 2 doctors, and 3 nurses waiting for her!

My doctor told me to deliver just her head and then stop pushing so she could clear her airway and make sure there was no cord wrapped around her.

WHATEVER.

I DON'T HAVE AN EPIDURAL AND THIS BABY HAS GOT TO GO!

I pushed 3 times.

SOMEHOW within those 3 pushes the doctor convinced my husband to venture south to catch the action. He is forever scarred. He's lucky it was tiny baby Laiden and not melon headed Liam he saw come out!

Laiden arrived on the 3rd push at 8:12 am. She was 4 pounds, 14 ounces and 18.5" long. She was born with more hair than Liam currently has and actually looks like ME!

Please don't comment on my fatty fat fat face and my extra chins.

The NICU crew whisked her away after this quickie photo op. She had some labored breathing but they thought she would do well!

I celebrated my level ONE tear (instead of my previous THREE... Liam really is a melon head) and got stitched up.

I also gleamed a bit feeling all super womanish delivering without an epidural. Anyone who delivers totally drug free needs a psych eval stat.

I have tons more baby-mama-drama to share, but I've come to the end of Labor and Delivery so I'll save Postpartum and NICU for tomorrow. Stay Tuned!

Special Announcement

2:39 PM

We are expecting... AGAIN!

Our due date is November 23, 2012!

We are really excited!

The LONG DRAWN OUT Story will come soon... don't worry!

*SIDE NOTE*
I have been very hesitant to tell anyone because quite frankly, negative feedback in reference to this situation (even in jest) offends me. So before I go any further I want to clarify a few things and answer a few, what I consider, dumb questions...

1. Was this an accident?
Don't you see that children are God's best gift? the fruit of the womb his generous legacy? Like a warrior's fistful of arrows are the children of a vigorous youth. Oh, how blessed are you parents, with your quivers full of children! Your enemies don't stand a chance against you; you'll sweep them right off your doorstep. Psalm 127: 3-5
Children are NEVER accidents.

2. Did you plan this?
We plan the way we want to live, but only God makes us able to live it. Proverbs 16:9
I believe that only God can truly plan this life. Ask all the people who try for years and years to have children and can't...

3. Do you not know what makes babies?
yeah... I don't even have a G rated verse for that...
Yes... we know perfectly well what makes babies.

I could go on and on with the nonsense... If you have any other such questions, here is what you do:
1) Write them down
2) Throw them in the trash
*END SIDE NOTE*

I hope you're as thrilled as we are! Thank you for sharing in our joy!!

When a woman gives birth, she has a hard time, there's no getting around it. But when the baby is born, there is joy in the birth. This new life in the world wipes out memory of the pain. John 16:21

Bloopers:

This is what I think about being a big brother...

Do you want me to pose? How about this?

How about I wiggle?

Or wave my arms?

I'm just kidding, momma! I DO want to be a big brother!

A Baby Story

9:34 AM

Warning: Due to the Graphic Nature of This Post, Reader Discretion Is Advised.

TLC ain't got nothing on this story! Why share? Well, every woman LOVES a birth story (Whether she admits it or not! Any woman who claims otherwise spews lies or is really a man!) AND because I lost any trace of modesty and reserve I once owned in the delivery room. Grab some popcorn, it's gonna be a good one!

While I'm handing out warnings, this story is L-O-N-G. Ye be warned.

Here goes...

I suppose I should start from the 36 week point. For those that are unaware, this is where the invasive prenatal appointments begin and the doctor "checks" the pregnant woman's cervix for dilation (openness) and effacement (thinness) as well as the position of the baby (preferably pointed down!). It's a very unflattering and uncomfortable event. For me, and apparently most people, it was followed by super scary bleeding and horrendous cramping. Luckily, Tylenol is safe in pregnancy!

Anyways... at my 36 week appointment my super fantabulous doctor (no sarcasm, I ADORE HER) "checked" me and was pleased to announce that I was 2 cm dilated and 75% effaced already! "Good Job!" She exclaimed. I was so excited and proud... as if I really had control over the situation! I was SO READY to deliver, or so I thought. With this being my first child, I then got a little frantic and panicked! I went home and immediately packed my hospital bag. I also packed the car with the diaper bag, car seat, and all the rest of my hospital necessities. In my head I just knew my water would break any second now.

Fast forward one week and I'm still pregnant! YAY! (that one was sarcasm in case you missed it) I was hoping to go into my 37 week appointment and have her tell me I was 4 cm and should go to the hospital immediately... no such luck. I was STILL 2 cm and only 80% effaced. It was technically better than I expected, as I had a dream after my 36 week appointment that at my next appointment I had suddenly become uneffaced and undilated and my labor progression was actually moving backwards! I've been told that's not possible... but I always fear the worst.

At this point I had begun praying that I would NOT go into labor on my own. My doctor was going out of town that weekend and I really wanted her to deliver me. If I'm being honest, I had also begun to get really scared about delivering. I had no idea what was going to happen. I worked in an OB-GYN office, so I technically knew the procedures and I had talked to so many friends about "what to expect"; but until you experience it for yourself, you won't KNOW what to expect regardless of how many stories you listen to. You can take 10 women and set them up for the same pregnancy and labor and delivery and all 10 of them will react totally different. I had no idea how I would handle labor. Would I scream like a lunatic in horrid pain? Would I be pleasant and euphoric (yeah... right!)?

Moving right along to 38 weeks. You guessed it, still pregnant! At my 38 week appointment I was 3 cm and 100% effaced. Finally more progress! I began to wonder... with literally no cervix left, how on earth was that baby still in there?! My fantabulous doctor then stripped my membranes. This involves separating the membrane that connects the amniotic sac to the wall of the uterus, which supposedly releases hormones called prostaglandins that cause the cervix to "ripen" and contractions to begin. I had talked to a few coworkers beforehand that had the procedure done and got everything from "it didn't hurt" to "it hurt worse than labor"... weirdos? I'm here to tell you that IT HURTS! Thank You Jesus for epidurals, Amen.

Funny side-note. Prostaglandins are also found in semen. Maybe there is some truth to everyone, and I mean EVERYONE telling me "The best way to get your baby out is the same way you got him in there!" TMI WARNING: That didn't work either.

After the dreadful stripping of the membranes, I experienced the usual bleeding and cramping. Later that evening I lost my mucous plug. YAY! Baby on the way? Nope.

By this point I had stopped working. My swelling was out of control and I wanted a few days to tidy the house and just rest.

I went back in for my 39 week appointment (at 38 weeks and 6 days!) and I was STILL 3 cm and 100% effaced... drat! I didn't want to endure having my membranes stripped again, so I was set up for an induction on Friday (The appointment was on Wednesday).

You may want to break for coffee and cake now. We are about to get to the more exciting stuff.

Over the course of the past few weeks my contractions had become stronger and more frequent. Thursday evening before my induction I began having mildly painful contractions. They were sporadic, but painful. I don't think I slept that night at all. Between the contractions and the anticipation there was just no way to rest. Will didn't sleep either.

My alarm went off at 4 am Friday... not that I needed it. I got out of bed and began preparing for the big day. I wasn't quite sure how to prepare myself for labor... makeup? hairstyle? I opted for no makeup and hair piled sloppily atop my noggin, always a classic. We arrived at the hospital promptly at 5 am with baggage in tow. I, as usual, overpacked. Yes, I DO NEED 6 pairs of underwear for 2 days in the hospital. You can never be too prepared.

After checking in through the E.R. we were directed to the Labor and Delivery floor. The nurses were super sweet. I left a "specimen" and donned my sexy hospital gown. Working for the OB that is set to deliver you has it's perks. My delivery instructions were totally ready and very specific. "I don't want her to feel it" was literally part of my instructions. I had considered going all natural for most of my pregnancy... but after the pain I experienced just from stripping my membranes and the contractions I had already started to have, I knew I would not be able to handle labor without meds. I wanted labor and delivery to be as pleasant as possible... if that's possible!

The nurse then began questioning my every life moment for her records. She crossed the line and embarrassingly asked me my weight... in front of my husband. Heifer. My dear husband has never known me as anything other than 110 pounds. Don't get me wrong, I told him how much weight I gained, but I never told him what I weighed. Sure, he can do math. In my mind though, how much I actually weigh and how much weight I gained are two completely different worlds.
Shut Up! They are not the same!!
After the series of questions ranging from family history to hemorrhoids, the nurse placed my IV... in my forearm... OUCH! Apparently that's the best location for baby holding. She then pumped me with a bag of fluids and the had a little look-see down south. She happily reported I had made it to 4 cm and was completely effaced all on my own. Way to go body, way to go!! After my dear friend fluid was in my system the nurse paged my new BFF, the anesthesiologist.

Bend over,  hug the pillow, hold still, shoulders straight... EPIDURAL! I suppose I had the best anesthesiologist on the planet because I didn't feel a single thing after she wiped my back with something cold. Seriously, my IV hurt worse! Not only did I not feel the placement of my epidural, the dosage was phenomenal! I felt pressure, but no pain! I could actually feel my contractions but they didn't hurt... does it get any better?? I could even move my legs on my own, though they were pretty "heavy". Thank You Jesus for epidurals, Amen. After my wonderful epidural, my nurse started my Pitocin (the drug used to induce Labor) on the lowest dose.

My Labor and Delivery is going to totally ROCK! This is SO EASY. Famous last words?

Post Epidural Kick-In Party, my fab-tastic doctor arrived to break my water. She checked me and I had dilated to 5 cm. YAY! Baby will be here by like 9:00, right?

She broke my water with a plastic stick and cheered when I gushed clear fluid! Here We Go! She said she would see me at lunch and we would have a baby :)

By now it's 8:00 and I'm having pretty regular contractions. I still feel good. I try as much as possible to rest while I can. I'm chatting with Will, checking facebook, texting family, life is good.

Let's skip ahead a few hours, shall we?

At 11:00 my doctor calls to check on me. The nurse comes in and checks me. I'm 8 cm. Almost There. By this time I am slightly less chipper. My body hurts, I'm exhausted, and I am STARVING! No Food after midnight... how am I supposed to have the strength to push a baby out with no food?! I have an overall feeling of crud. Thank You Jesus for epidurals, because this could be WAY WORSE, Amen.

At 11:30 my monitor starts to beep. My nurse comes in and moves me onto my side... Baby's heart rate was too low! Moving onto my left side solved the problem.

At 12:00 I begin to feel the most ridiculous pressure down under. I informed Will that the baby was ready...

Waiting

Waiting

Waiting

At 12:30 my doctor calls again to check on me. The nurse comes in to check me... and snatches her hand back from checking me as though my fetus had just tried to bite her and says "Oh, my!"
Not Good.
Me: "What's wrong?"
Nurse: "Let me just go talk to Dr. Logan"

Me: "How far am I dilated?"
Nurse: "I'll be right back, hun. I just have to go let her know."

Me: " HOW FAR AM I DILATED?!"
Nurse: "Sweetie, you're ready to push. You're 10 cm and his head is RIGHT THERE!"
Me: ...silence...

Suddenly, nurses begin to swarm around my room like bees. They run back and forth grabbing supplies and moving furniture. They lay out tarps and tools and wheel in carts with unknown items. My pitocin gets bumped up to make the process "quick".

Apparently my bed was a transformer. It went from hospital bed to birthing station in a matter of seconds. The nurse puts my feet up into the stirrups as my lovely doctor waltzes through the door! Will assumed his position to my left up near my head. We had both agreed previously that it was best for him to remain out of view of all the action. In his own words: "I have a mental image of what that looks like and I don't want to ruin it... I'll see it again in 6 weeks!"

At 1:03 I began to push. I had a nurse holding each leg and a husband literally helping me push by hoisting me forward with every contraction.

Insert loads and loads and loads of "You're doing great", "Come on, PUSH!", "Deep breath and push, push, push, push, push...", "You're almost there, just one more push!"

Thank You Jesus for epidurals, Amen.

The increase in Pitocin that my nurse gave me had my contractions coming CONSTANTLY. I only had about 15-30 seconds in between each contraction. They were coming so fast poor baby Liam was in distress! They lowered my Pitocin and we continued.

Finally 13 minutes after it all started and with a vacuum on his head, Liam was born! William "Liam" Thomas Sledge was born Friday October 28, 2011 at 1:16 pm and weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 19.5 inches!

Liam came out a perfect little smurf. He was a beautiful shade of blue. After a good nose and throat suction he took his first breaths and exercised his lungs and vocal cords. He was so perfect. I cried so hard that I shook all over. Overwhelmed is the only word I can use. The child I carried, prayed for, loved, and worried about for 9 months had arrived. I still couldn't believe he was mine. In fact, if I hadn't actually seen him come out I probably wouldn't! Will and I embraced and cried sappily. I hate to play down the moment, but it's such a personal treasure. It really was so overwhelming and so beautiful that I cry when I recall it. Will was so proud I could feel it. It literally radiated from him. I was just as proud, though it's radiation was totally blocked by exhaustion.

Labor and Delivery is amazing. That experience has forever changed my life. The thing that I feared the most during my entire pregnancy was so phenomenal that I would do it again in a heartbeat... though that is not what I was thinking right after... or for the first week for that matter. It was not fun, glamorous, or the least bit appealing in any sense other than the complete beauty of it and the joy I felt inside. How I felt outside was an entirely different story.

The "baby catcher", as my nurse called her, quickly grabbed him and took him to the baby station in my room to clean him up. My doctor delivered the placenta, which is quite disgusting but as much of a relief to get out as the baby was!

Will and I laughed and cried while waiting to hold our bundle of joy. My doctor was down there doing her thing when Will leaned in and told me "I saw way more than I wanted to!" I laughed it off and asked if he was scarred for life. "She used scissors!" he said. "I could hear her cutting!"

Oh. My. God. Thank You Jesus for epidurals, Amen.

As the doctor sewed up the extra hole now in my body, the nurse requested the degree of my "tear" (A hole or split in something caused by it having been pulled apart forcefully. OUCH!)... "Oh... let's see... Yeah, that's a THREE" she said.

Wonderful. Thank You Jesus for epidurals, Amen.

Unfortunately, they removed my dearest epidural. I'll miss you, my friend!

The "baby catcher" brought Liam to me. We did "skin to skin" and I attempted nursing him. It was such a wonderful, beautiful time. I could already tell he recognized my voice. I spoke softly to him and listened to him coo. I wish I could bottle the wave of emotions I experienced. I could sell it and make a killing... would that make me a drug dealer? Who cares.

If that picture doesn't make your vacant womb crave a child, you've probably had a hysterectomy.

Now would be a good time to refill your coffee and get more cake! I'm not even close to done...

After our bonding time, the nursery came and took Liam for his bath and official weigh in and etc. My nurse found food to ease my famished state.

Cold Hospital Fish and Rice. Yum? I was so hungry I couldn't help but eat it.

We informed our visitors and family via text that they could go see Liam at the nursery and that Will and I would be ready for company at 3:00 in our postpartum room. I requested not to see anyone before delivery and I never regret that decision. It was so nice and peaceful in the L&D room not having to "entertain" visitors and then ask them to leave every time the nurse decided to bust in and create an awkward moment.

Then we waited to be moved to the Postpartum Floor.

When 3:00 rolled around, Will asked the nurse how much longer before we were moved. She said it would be at least another hour. UGH, the AGONY! So, we let all of our family and visitors go ahead and visit in L&D.

Fast Forward two hours...

By 5:00 my new mommy bliss and epidural were both totally gone. I was in SEVERE pain and still sitting in a bed in L&D. My sweet nurse brought me pain medicine and apologized for the delay. "There are no open rooms in postpartum!"

By 6:00 I was pretty sure I was dying and wouldn't make it out of L&D alive. The nurse brought me another dose of pain medicine after Will told her I was in terrible pain still. The nurse asked him where I was hurting... really? where am I hurting? To quote him exactly: "Um, where all the action happened..."

At 6:30 I had enough and lost my religion. I won't go into detail about what went on in order to protect my reputation, but it wasn't good. I was the victim of an unfortunate hospital understaffing dilemma. My nurses were all wonderful. The fact of the matter is I should have been in a postpartum room being cared for by postpartum nurses. The L&D nurses had done their part with me already. I was in limbo... Labor & Delivery was done with me but Postpartum wasn't ready for me. This sad situation left me sitting uncared for in horrendous pain. Luckily, after my fit, my L&D nurses stepped up and did the postpartum job. I had 2 Percocet and a Naproxen "in my system" but I still felt like my nether region was on FIRE. Then it came! The second best labor & delivery item after the epidural... The Maxi Pad Cocktail. I honestly don't know what this concoction is really called, but I call it heaven. The Maxi Pad Cocktail is a Maxi Pad, an Ice Pack, Witch Hazel Pads, and Epifoam. It was perfection in my mesh hospital panties. I went from near death to happy momma in a matter of minutes.

It wasn't until 8:30 that I was FINALLY moved to my postpartum room. We were all exhausted.

Photobucket

I wish I had more exciting things to tell you, but the remainder of my hospital stay was fairly uneventful. There was lots of Maxi Pad Cocktail changing and nursing attempts and welcoming visitors with a sloppy bun on my head and bags under my eyes. The food was terrible. The bed was worse than the food. I got my flu shot and my DPT shot. I knew I loved the kid because I was voluntarily taking a needle for him. I continued to suffer the consequences of an understaffed hospital. I had good nurses. I had bad nurses. I fought the bad ones every few hours for the pain medicine that they treated me like I didn't need. "Are you sure you need them both? I'll just bring you one and if you're still hurting in an hour you can have another." Really? I don't want to hurt AT ALL! Maybe they didn't realize I just had a baby?

Call me Debbie Downer, but I'm glad that part is over!

The best part of it all?

Taking this guy home...

Food

The Cheater's Guide to Chicken & Waffles

5:55 PM

Chicken & Waffles. Best. Food. Ever. Never heard of it? Well, you're probably not from the south. No worries, Wikipedia knows all.

UNFORTUNATELY... it's generally not a food option. Several Factors play into this scenario...
1) Finding a restaurant that serves Chicken & Waffles is nearly impossible. I have definitely never seen it locally.
2) I don't own a Waffle Iron. Sad truth.
3) In my current 9 month Preggo state... The act of standing over a stovetop frying chicken is completely unappealing.

Go figure 9 months Preggo is when I crave Chicken & Waffles!

What's a girl to do?

Cheat.

Here's the Cheater's Guide to Chicken and Waffles. Same taste... less work.

What you'll need:
Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts
Flour
Butter
Tony Chachere's Seasoning (or whatever seasonings you like for fried chicken)
Frozen Waffles (NO, I'M NOT JOKING)
Maple Syrup
Ziploc Bag
Baking Dish

ummm.... and an oven and a toaster... but those are probably obvious... as is plate, fork, knife, etc. but just in case you were unaware, now you know.

I don't measure and I'm bad a giving directions :) Here Goes...

Thaw Your Chicken.

YUM! Chicken!
Heat Oven to 425 degrees.
Put Flour and Seasoning into Ziploc Bag and mix. (I do a 2:1 ratio)

Best Ever! Try It!
Melt Butter in Baking Dish (I used 1/4 cup for an 8x8 dish)
Place Chicken into Ziploc Bag and shake until the chicken is covered with the flour mixture.
Remove Chicken from Ziploc Bag and place in Baking Dish.

Ready to go into the oven!
Bake for 20 minutes.

Flip Chicken.

Bake for another 20 minutes.

Voila! Oven Baked Fried Chicken. It makes no sense, I know.

Now the tricky part...

  +

(please excuse my dirty toaster)

My "plating" skills leave much to be desired... darn you food network!
It may not look like much, but that was AWESOME! The perfect combination of sweet and salty, carbs and protein, soft and crunchy....

I'm drooling over my empty plate!

It's not just a pregnancy thing! I promise it's fab and much easier than actually frying chicken and making waffles!

Happy Wednesday!

Cleaning

Stay At Home Mom

10:09 AM

Today is Tuesday and is day T-W-O of my newest official title, Stay At Home Mom... sans the actual mom part considering my first born is still unborn. Regardless, my last day of work was Friday and I now stay at home. It is quite bittersweet, actually. As much as I am excited for my little Liam's arrival, I will dearly miss all of the girls I worked with at the ol' PFW.

It's been all cleaning all the time around here the past two days, and by that I do mean the "Pregnant Lady" version. It may not seem as though I've done much, but if you take what I've done and add the Pregnant Lady part, you will see that in reality I have done the equivalent of climbing Mt. Everest. It's not easy bent over a bathtub scrubbing with this massive belly. Not to mention, exhaustion happens by merely walking to the fridge to refill my water... any more than that is sheer woman-powered-will.

Not only am I nesting a wee bit, I'm also having a slight meltdown about visitors and the like to my humble abode. Cleaning is the only solution. I'm also bound and determined to "show" my husband that I promise to actually do things besides just stay at home! "Earn My Keep" if you will. I feel so strongly that with my new title of SAHM comes the responsibility of not only caring for my child, but also for my home. The more I study about God's desires and plans for me as a wife and mother, the more I see my responsibility in running our home.

"She carefully watches everything in her household
and suffers nothing from laziness." Proverbs 31:27

Not quite God's word, but I thought it was funny...

"Housework is what a woman does that nobody notices unless she hasn't done it." -Evan Esar

Deep down inside, I know it has always been my responsibility to care for our home... I was just slightly less convicted about it when I worked as many hours a week as my husband AND had no wee babe to look after. Luckily I have a wonderful husband who has loved me for four and one half years regardless... and he cleans too!

Anyways... I've been cleaning, sitting, cleaning, sitting for two days! I've actually made a bit of progress and feel slightly more prepared for Liam's arrival. I even made a little list of all the "chores" that need to be done around the house and broke it down into things that need to be done everyday or once a week or once a month. I'm OCD... I can't help it... I like a list! Maybe breaking it down by room and how often it needs doing will make the daunting task of a "spotless" house slightly more manageable and realistic... and make me more motivated to do it!

I'm hoping the key to home management success is organization and little projects. So far it has worked! I've done some deep cleaning and had dinner ready for the hubs without totally overexerting myself both days of my new "job"... now to add in the baby :)

On another Preggo note... I caved and did some Maternity Pictures. I REALLY wanted to do them about 30-32 weeks before I looked like a whale. Unfortunately, the timing and arrangements just would not work in my favor. I had decided not to do them because I'm so swollen and don't want to remember myself full of fluid and 40 pounds heavier than I should be; however, I knew if I didn't do them I would regret it. After all, I won't be this big forever... or so I've been told... at this point I'm still not totally convinced that my body can go back to pre-pregnancy size.

SO... here are some not so glamorous 38 weeks and 2 days Preggo photos! Enjoy!

Becoming a Mom...

6:13 PM

My life since that tiny faint pink line showed up on a pregnancy test in February has been consumed by "Having a Baby". Everything I eat, purchase, save for, think about, stress about, pray about, dream about, is all about "Having a Baby". I've been to my OB appointments, I've decorated a nursery, I've read books, I've "mentally prepared myself" for labor (that last one is still in question. I'm ready to have a baby.

Call me crazy, or stupid... at this point I'm so fat and pregnant (a) I don't care and (b) there's nothing I could do about it anyways...

Until tonight, while in the shower (If you haven't noticed, that's when I do all my big thinking), I never thought past "Having a Baby". Whats the next step in line? What happens after I have this baby? Oh, I don't know, maybe... BECOMING A MOM?!

WHAM! if i hadn't been sitting down I would have fallen over. Why in all of this preparation had I not even considered this whole becoming a mom thing? That is a really big step that I don't know if I'm prepared for (too late now, well you better get ready, blah, blah, blah, thanks readers, I can hear you from here!!). Being a mom is much, much bigger than birthing this child.

What if I mess up? What if I don't teach him all the things he needs to know? What if I'm a bad influence on him? What if he doesn't like me? What if I spoil him too much? What if I deprive him of things he needs? What if he's put in a psychiatric ward by the time he is 12 and it's all my fault??

*panic*

So, I did what I always do when I panic... I prayed for Liam.

Dear God, please grow this baby boy big and strong. Lord, I know you have huge plans for and him and his future and that you will provide for him no matter what, even despite my shortcomings as a mom. Father, don't let my inabilities affect his abilities. Give him a heart that always seeks you and never sways from your path. God, equip me to raise this child, because I can't do this without you. Surround me with knowledgeable, Godly women to help me. Lord, raise up baby Liam and allow him to stand strong on the promises you've made, let him fulfill the plans that you have for his life, let him always find comfort in you. Thank you Jesus for this precious little man. Amen.

So simple, I know, and probably on the verge of silly.

Isn't this what every mother wants for her son?
Well, yes, but I find that simply wanting vs actually asking God and proclaiming his promises are two vastly different worlds.
"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done." Phil 4:6

Doesn't God already know you can't do this alone?
It's amazing the comfort I find in just telling God I'm incompetent even though he already knows.
"may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen." Heb 13:21

*side note* Call me crazy (again), but Liam knows when I pray for him. Seriously. There are 4 things he ALWAYS moves for...
1. Mexican Food - understandable... What on your insides doesn't move for that spicy stuff?
2. "Aunt" Lisa - understandable... She has the sweetest, most kind and compassionate voice, what baby wouldn't love that?
3. Will's Car Stereo - understandable... With subwoofers that loud, I'm surprised the child isn't traumatized from all of my insides shaking!
4. My Prayers For Him - explain that one?

Now I'm sitting on the couch hoping that I can be everything Liam needs me to be as a mom, knowing I'll fall short sometimes, and thanking God for his provision regardless.

"Mom" here I come...

Thirty-six Weeks

6:52 PM

Thirty-six weeks of gestation (sounds so fancy!) is apparently the point in pregnancy in which you lose your mind. Maybe it's the big 36 week appointment at which you become violated by your OB doctor like never before, or maybe it's the sleep deprived, slightly-panicked-because-things-aren't-ready-yet state that brings about total mind meltdown. Is there a "C, all of the above"?

Not only does my brain no longer function properly (according to experts, it never will again...) but now I'm nesting. Seriously. Suddenly I have the urge to scrub base boards and clean behind things!? What the heck!? Now, I don't keep a messy house to start with so there isn't tons to be done, but I'm 30 pounds heavier than normal and I waddle like a duck and I can't lift or bend or pull anything...how on earth am I supposed to deep clean?

I'm trying to make the most of the desire while I have it. Today I returned duplicate gifts to the store and then did some shopping for Liam's nursery. I washed all of his newborn clothes, blankets, burp clothes, towels and rags, etc. I packed my hospital bag and his diaper bag, outfitted the car with the car seat, started to tackle the insanity that is the nursery (and made some progress!), made a donation bag for goodwill, and listed some items on craigslist. I know that doesn't seem like much, but that is huge compared to what I have been doing... Which is a whole lot of nothing!! I am hoping I can be just as successful tomorrow so I can call it a productive weekend and feel slightly more at ease about going into labor randomly this week.

A Trial Run

7:19 PM

First I have to brag on my super sweetheart of a husband.

Some background info: When Will and I got married we each came into the relationship with an Apple laptop (I <3 Apple), I had an iBook and he had a MacBook. It was then deemed "unnecessary" and "frivolous" to be in possession of 2 such fabulous laptops. Mine being the older, less valuable, and the one financed, was sold. Since that time, Will has upgraded his MacBook EVERY time Apple releases a new one... and Leah uses a crummy, hand-me-down Dell PC... That she NEVER complains about having to use. Not that I'm keeping score or anything like that...

I DO have an iPhone... I can't lie! (I'm blogging from it now! Woot!) AND it HAS been upgraded EVERY time Apple releases a new one. So I am thankful for that. HOWEVER, I have been a tad envious of my husbands super sweet Apple products... Namely his MacBook!

Being a fantastic man and future father, Will surprised me with an iPad last week! So I traded in the Dell and I've been doing all of my computering from said iPad. So far, so good. I've run into a few snags with not having flash (darn you, Apple!!) and I will have to use Will's MacBook for my serious photo editing. Aside from those mini setbacks, I'm facebooking, blogging, and pinteresting (the only things that really matter) from iPad or iPhone with ease! Yay! Plus, the calendar totally rocks my world! Three cheers for organization!!

Now to the real story of the night.

I ordered my pack and play from target.com a few weeks ago. I figured it was one of those "needs" that was a little too pricey for anyone else to purchase for me. It was on sale at the time, so I took the bait and handed them my card info! It came in super fast and it has just been sitting in Liam's room in the shipping box (like pretty much everything else!). So apparently I was feeling frisky enough to pull that bad boy out and "put it together".

Now, I know this is my first child, but I am no stranger to the pack and play. I remember my mother using one for my siblings at the pool or park or anywhere we might have been that she could whip it out and set wee baby down. They're every mom's go to tool! The one thing I remember most about pack and plays is their portability and ease of use. Well let me tell you about mine!

MY pack and play is a fancy model. It comes with 600 useless plastic pieces that have to be assembled and added on. A changing table, a storage bin, a mobile, a nightlight and music box... What the heck?! I spent an hour reading directions and inserting part A into part B until a hear a click but without cracking the plastic... Oh my. Here is my super fancy pants pack and play all assembled.

Granted, the "bones" of it, and by that I mean the actual pack and play sans ridiculous attachments, is super easy. It pops right open and ta-da, baby holder! The bassinet part takes some time to install, but it's sturdy and works well.

I say all of this not to complain about the pack and play and all of it's plastic attachment glory, but to make note that I'm thankful for that "Trial Run". I can only imagine a few weeks from now, baby in hand and running on no sleep, trying to assemble that thing! What a nightmare! I Now feel prepared to whip out my pack and play anytime with no hesitation or directions! I'm starting to wish that I had more trial run opportunities available... Like for Labor!

While I'm sharing. Here is a pic of Liam's nursery.

Can you say not ready? It's like a really bad I-Spy. It does have an AWESOME changing table ($32.50 from the thrift store and NEVER USED!! Thanks, Mom and Dad!). It may or may not stay that color... Stay tuned for that one.

Here is his precious closet... well, half really. Someone (me!) has some washing to do!

The countdown is ON! maximum 4 weeks until Liam arrives... I've got a lot to do!
